Creative Web Design with MicroEd

Creative Web Design with MicroEd

Jan 9, 2013

As we head into 2013, I thought it would be a good chance to show some recent websites we completed late last year. These are great examples of what you can achieve within our affordable website packages.

We’ll also take the opportunity to explain some new products we offer and search engine considerations that need to be followed after important updates by Google.

Content Management Systems & Dynamic Websites

Static websites are built using individual files. This is fine for something small, but it can make editing much harder. Aside from the fact that editing requires basic programming knowledge, or an application like Adobe Contribute, these websites often end up inconsistent over time due to poor quality code and modifications.

creativeweb-wordpress-logoA Dynamic website is usually built with server side code. Among other things, you can store data and create websites that have a consistent template. With a backend, this is known as a Content Management System.

We provide WordPress for most sites, and an eCommerce package to handle high volume sales. Both have plenty of plugins which speed up development and improve the end product for your budget. We can have a custom application created as well.

Editing pages and content is similar to using a word processor, easy!

Mobile & Tablet Compatibility

mobile-logoEver looked at a website on a smartphone and noticed the text is too small to read? Maybe it just won’t work properly? We offer a couple simple mobile website solutions that you can have installed on just about any existing site. Portable devices see this site, in some cases we are able to offer a switch between the two, this is handy for larger screen devices.

Further ahead (but already with us) you can also consider high density displays (e.g. Apple Retina Display), these are capable of showing 4x the detail of a regular monitor. The future of web design is scalability.

Search Engine Optimization & Social Media

google-logoGoogle likes to throw a curve ball every few months, this makes it harder to get on the first page for common keywords. Abuse and the constant hunt for better quality results is the reason. Google’s Panda and Penguin updates changed the way we deal with some existing SEO techniques.

Some basic notes to take from these updates that are easy enough to apply yourself are as follows. Quality content, without keyword stuffing or duplication. Google wants real content written by humans. Blogging is preferable, and if you have the time and business for it, a blog will greatly improve your SEO.

The idea of setting up a few sites with fill content is long dead, this is called link farming. You can still park a domain, but redirect it to your main site or not at all. Don’t buy into optimization services that offer to drive traffic from link farms. You want to put your link on sites or blogs that have a similar subject matter and quality content, a few well placed links can go a long way. There are some other things, but these basics should keep you out of trouble and avoid any penalty.

Social Media if you aren’t using it already, can be a powerful marketing and SEO tool. Why not give it a go? It’s free and can reach thousands of people in an instant, with traffic growth as more people share and follow your social page or feed. The big ones are Twitter and Facebook, but there are others.

Creative Web Design

By now you are probably bored out of your mind from my technical ramblings. But this is important information you need to know, if you want your website investment to work properly for you.

So lets look at a couple websites we have launched in the last few months. We try to keep up with latest design trends, and stay within a reasonable budget. A nice balance of quality, reliability and design is something we are proud of with our Web Services division.
